VAT Guide

VAT is charged on most printed items, there are exceptions on some advertising material such as flyers and leaflets. This is determined by what the flyer or leaflet is going to be used for. We have explained the exceptions below and you can always check the HMRC website.

Most flyers and leaflets are free from VAT unless the flyer or leaflet is deemed to have a monetary value, is designed to be written on or is to be kept for future reference. In these cases VAT will be charged.

Avoid words like;

  • FREE ADMISSION with this flyer
  • FREE DRINK with this flyer
  • FREE MEAL with this flyer
  • DISCOUNT with this flyer
  • CASH BACK with this flyer

Flyers or leaflets that contain this kind of offer are deemed to have a monetary value and VAT will be charged.

Avoid content like;

  • CALENDARS
  • FIXTURE LISTS
  • CONVERSION CHARTS
  • PERFORATED SLIPS OF ANY KIND

 
Flyers or leaflets with this kind of content are designed to be kept for future reference and VAT will be charged.

Avoid content like;

  • PLEASE COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING
  • PLEASE TICK THE FOLLOWING
  • REPLY FORMS
  • BALLOT OR VOTING SHEETS

 
Flyers or leaflets that include any area or space that is reserved for the intention of being written on are subject to VAT and it will be charged.

To summarise, make content on flyers and leaflets informative, advertise your products and services, use plenty of images and reduce text where possible, encourage contact via phone, email or website. Avoid the content listed above and you can avoid paying VAT on your flyers and leaflets.
